Le Weekend, in pictures

August 31, 2009

Woah, I blinked and a whole week went by there. How did I miss that?

Anyway, back on track now. Hope you had a nice weekend, here’s what I got up to.

Legged it home after work on Friday (via Pintxo – wasn’t loving the chef’s work that night, everything tasted a bit meh, sadly) (oh and via Urban Outfitters where I picked up a pretty and totally impractical pink wallet. Bold.) to hop into the car and head up North to visit my mum at the circus.

Thanks to Sat Nav trying to lead us down a road that was closed, we didn’t get there until well 11- just in time for a chinwag and some wine.

Saturday, Eoghan and I went for a wander around the pretty town of Bangor and came across a very cute sweet shop selling all sorts of old school treats.

I bought a couple of packets of that really bubbly gum – cue 20 minutes of blowing chewing gum bubbles on the street and getting LOTS of funny looks.

Then, back to the show to check out the new juggler

Aaron’s impressive hand-balancing act:

And my (not so) little cousin Stephen:

After a mammoth supermarket sweep in Newry on Sunday, we headed back for lots of tea, papers, and my favourite dinner.

And some more tea.

How was your weekend?

PS

A few mini movie reviews:

500 Days of Summer: Adorable flick, killer soundtrack, highly recommended.
GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra: Eoghan described it in three words: “Boom, Boom, Pow.” That kind of covers it, methinks.

Edie

August 21, 2009

Maybe I was just too used to the rough and tumble ways of Ethan, but on meeting Edie, I was instantly struck by how gentle a little girl she was. She was just over a year old when we had our session, and isn’t she the cutest little thing?

I this is my favourite – I love those colourful pegs!:

And how cute is her expression in this shot? She’s off in her own little world:

We lucked out with some really pretty light:

And you might recognise these shots from the site’s landing page:

Time travelling

August 18, 2009

We went to see The Time Traveller’s Wife last night (just what Mondays need, eh, a bit of tear-jerking). I loved Audrey Niffenegger’s beautiful book and I think the film captured the essence and the mood of it wonderfully, while still being a great flick in its own right. But I think what stood out the most for me was the simply stunning lighting, and absolutely gorgeous cinematography. I think the film poster might indicate that the people behind it have a bit of a thing for bokeh:

AM:TP final

While the film was good, and certainly worth checking out if you like your rom coms with a side of tears, the visuals were stunning. Just gloriously vivid and gorgeous and romantic, with lots of delicious bokeh, while still managing to remain subtle. The use of focus and blur was also lovely. Director of Photography Florian Ballhaus (Sex and the City, Flightplan, and Marley & Me are just a few previous projects) has a wonderful eye. I’d almost recommend seeing the flick based on the lighting that alone. It was that pretty.

All that bokeh-loving inspired this quick and dirty shot, taken shortly before midnight last night.

It’s nowhere near as pretty, but it is a fairly accurate representation of the last thing I see before I close my eyes. Through our paper thin blinds, the whole city is sparkling amber and, although it might seem like it would get annoying, I still love it.

(P.S. On a scale of 1 to The Notebook Eoghan gives The Time Traveller’s Wife a 6.)

Le weekend, in pictures

August 17, 2009

Woah, did anyone else find that the weekend  simply flew by? I kind of can’t believe it’s Monday again.

On Friday, Eoghan had picked up a couple of yummy, juicy steaks so some marinade was called for:

Mix the finely chopped garlic, chilli and rosemary with a little olive oil and some soy sauce. Rub some salt and pepper into the steak (after giving it it a few goes with the tenderiser – very therapeutic!), pop it in a sandwhich bag with the mix then put it in the fridge and wait with a glass of wine until you’re ready for it. Yum!

Saturday I met up with two old college friends. Helen Alice (left) lives in Singapore now, so we only get to see her a few times a year. Obviously there’s Facebook and gChat, but it just isn’t the same. Etaoin and I had stories to tell that simply can’t be told through instant messaging. We met up at around 2.30pm for lunch.

We were still out at 12.30am, drinking cocktails in Spy. Yup, a lot of gossip. Isn’t it great though, not seeing someone for ages and being able to instantly fall back into old, comfortable ways?

Sunday, was spent hanging out with this little guy:

And this adorable six month old cutie:

Aren’t her eyes amazing? More pics of her on the way!

I then took my sis, Kelly, to CSI The Experience at The Ambassador, which was good, cheesy, forensic fun. And we cracked the case, whoop!

How was your weekend?

That time of year

August 14, 2009

I just seem to be seeing bees EVERYWHERE. I love the wing detail in this one, surprised my lens (50mm 1.4, or ‘Fiddy’ as I call it) picked it up so well.

Karla

August 11, 2009

It’s always said that it’s easy to take a good picture of a pretty girl, but, although Karla is without a doubt GORGEOUS (that skin, those teeth…grrr) the girl had to work it, Tyra-style for our shoot.

First of all it was FREEZING. We lucked out with some sun, but Mother Nature wouldn’t stretch to actually giving us the warmth that went with it.

So poor Karla had to frolick around in cute mini dresses and high heels looking like she was loving life, when really she was cursing her photographer and her mental ideas.

I love the shot below, probably my favourite from the session. I love the wistful expression on Karla’s face, the glow of the sun against her hair.

But if you could look outside this frame you’d see that she’s ditched her heels for Ugg boots and can barely feel her fingers. Seriously. What a pro, eh?

Le Weekend, in pictures

August 10, 2009

After shooting my first wedding on Friday – a fun, exhausting, stressful and exciting experience – I was pretty much wrecked for all of Saturday and Sunday.

I can’t post any pics of the wedding yet, but here’s a sneaky peak of what started it all – the gorgeous engagement ring.

Saturday, Eoghan and I went for a quick wander around the Arts Festival offerings in Kilkenny before heading back to Dublin (via Avoca in Rathcoole, where we picked up some Mango chutney and tasty cup cakes) where I promptly collapsed on the couch to read me some Jodi Picoult and eat Ritz crackers smeared with Philadelphia Light. Bliss.

We went to see Moon at The Lighthouse Cinema that evening. I really enjoyed it, the plot is a little thinner on the ground than I expected, but I love that mix of cold, clinical space and messy, complicated life. On a scale of 1 to a 2001: A Space Odyssey, Eoghan gave it an impressive 8.5.

Sunday was spent tidying, washing, reading, processing, all the while hearing the roar of the two Croker games in the background. Some yummy Mexican soup, a helping of Juno, three Sunday papers and a bit of messing on www.madmenyourself.com (anyone else addicted to that show?) and I was fit for bed.

How was your weekend?

Crafty buys

August 5, 2009

We took another trip to The Crafty Market last Sunday and I came away with lots of goodies:

The cute print is by talented illustrator Sarah Cunnigham (as soon as I can get a hold of links for these guys I’ll post them). She also does adorable illustrated books and handmade tooth fairies. Too cute.

The flower above is by Natalie, a super talented designer I first met when she nearly died designing the college paper, way back in the day. I was a news writer, she an NCAD design student – neither of us must have been big fans of sleep, if the all-nighters that she, Eoghan and I threw ourselves into every second week were anything to go by.

Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, we found out that she was going to have a stall at last Sunday’s market. She now has a much more stable job, gets lots of lovely sleep, and also gets to make these pretty little hair accessories (they also work as brooches), which you can buy here. The Eiffel tower is an old souvenir from Paris, but I just thought it went really well with the 19th century courtesan feel of the clip.

Next up is this very cool Rubik’s Cube ring (kind of), which goes from this:

To this:

And also this:

Ciara, if you ever feel the urge to propose to Mr Reilly, you might have found the perfect ring…!

The ring came packaged up this awesome little box:

Last, but not least, we have the adorable kettle necklace:

As if I needed another way to tell Eoghan how much I love tea (other than saying “What? A cup of tea you say? Why I’d love one!”; subtle as a brick to the shins I am.)

I’ve posted a few more shots from the market below. It takes place the first Sunday of every month, at Newmarket Square (near St Patrick’s Cathederal), Dublin 8, and is very much worth a visit. Check out their site for more deets.

And finally… Ethan looking cool and rocking Corina’s shades:
