Baby Darragh

February 9, 2010

Some newborns are small enough to hold with one hand. Not this guy.

Baby Darragh is a big, bouncing, healthy boy whose mum laughed out loud when she saw the baby bowl I had brought to photograph him in. There wasn’t a hope of him fitting in it.

Instead, I focused on getting shots of his incredibly cute pinkness, and his ten perfect pinkies. Sigh. I love newborns.

Love this sequence of him and his (awesome-looking) mum.

She looks even more awesome when you consider that she already has a very energetic 18-month old (who I photographed back in November).  Big bro is totally doting. The day mum came home from hospital he stopped kissing her tum and started kissing his little brother instead. Adorable.

Love this shot. He looks like he’s really thinking hard about something. Maybe trying to decide between eating, sleeping or pooping. Decisions, decisions…

Ethan, from the archives

February 5, 2010

I really miss taking pics of this little guy. Of course, there are camera phone shots, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to capture anything like this on an iPhone. This was taken back in December, before he got his hair trimmed and started looking like a proper little boy.

Stationery corner

February 3, 2010

I like pens. And pretty papers, and cute notebooks and nice calendars, and lovely card holders. That is all.

The best camera

February 1, 2010

There’s a great iPhone app by photographer Chase Jarvis called The Best Camera. Now, anyone who’s used an iPhone camera (particularly a pre-3GS one) might well laugh at this. I did, until I discovered the full name of Jarvis’ app – The Best Camera Is The One That’s with You.

That phrase has never been truer than in these past few weeks. Robbed (literally, hehe) of my beloved SLR and trusty point-and-shoot, I’ve been using my iPhone camera to try and fill the camera-shaped hole in my life. Definitely not ideal, but I am lucky enough to have recently upgraded to a 3GS (a few more megapixels, and the very impressive – and surprising – addition of spot metering) and have been trying and testing some of the zillion iPhone photo apps out there. More on those later, but first some iPhone shots to get me back in the swing of things. I just can’t imagine blogging without posting pics, so these will have to do for the next while!

I’ve been rooting through hard drives and draft posts, and have come across some pics and stories that have never seen the light of day, so I hope to remedy that in the coming weeks. In the meantime, is there anything you’d like from me? My photo knowledge is limited but my ramblings and opinions are not, so if there is any photo topic you’d like covered, anything you’d like to see more (or less) of on the blog, stick it in the comments. Camera or not, I’m hoping to do a bit of spring cleaning around here, and bring some fresh and interesting stuff to this wee blog, so feedback would be warmly welcomed with an appreciative e-hug and a virtual cup of tea.

Have a great week :)

P.S. That diary up there is my new red Simple Diary. Hearting it big time.

Ethan & Oranges

December 16, 2009

Isn’t this boy a happy camper? He had been off oranges for a couple of weeks due to an upset tummy, and this is him getting stuck back in. Love the big happy mess he makes.

Make hay (and photos) while the sun shines

December 14, 2009

Poor Yvonne. She arrives at the apartment carrying a bag of nachos, some dip and a bottle of Diet Coke, innocently thinking that she has come to watch the X Factor final.

But see, Yvonne has arrived as the sun does a pretty little golden dance across my balcony, and within minutes she’s out in the cold, holding a reflector and being curiously watched by a guy in the apartment across from us.

Believe it or not, Yvonne is extremely camera shy. Most pictures I have of her involve her hand shooting across to block her face, paparazzo style. No amount of ninja-like camera wielding or sneaky zoom techniques allowed me to get a picture of her.

But in the past few months, whether down to my insisting she stand in while I test out light and location while assisting me on shoots, or just down to us getting older and more mellow, Yvonne’s no photo rule has relaxed a bit. Which is why I love these shots so much. You never know, she could return to her no-photos-please days at any moment.

Her earrings were so pretty, her make-up so lovely, her blonde locks so crying out for a bit of flare, that I had to drag her out to the balcony and take her picture. And I’m so glad I did.

Isn’t she soooo pretty? And before you ask, I don’t know where she got those earrings but I’ll check.

I could tell you why she’s laughing in this pic. But I’m pretty sure Yvonne could sue me.

My absolute favourite. I heart flare.

I heart this city

December 10, 2009

What do you do when it’s too cold to go out, too dark to take pictures and there’s nothing good on TV? Cut up some paper, get some duct tape and make some heart-shaped bokeh of course!

These, I know, have been done (and done much better) a million times, but it was my first shot at them and I had lots of fun snapping the city and the traffic and seeing what heart-shaped cuteness came back.

Love how the red heart sticks out here

Some traffic…

When it got too cold to stand at the window or out on the balcony, I turned to the Christmas tree.

If you fancy giving this a go, there is a very nice little tutorial here.

Playing with light

December 3, 2009

I know very little about artificial lighting. I’m a massive lover of natural light, but really want to learn how to work with the man-made stuff. Over the past few months, I’ve been saving here and there and have invested in a few pieces and and have discovered a few great resources so I thought I would share what I have picked up for any photogs out there who are in a similar position. Nothing big and fancy – just a flash and some other gadgets…

The website
I’ll start with the most obvious one – Strobist it without a doubt the go-to site for DIY lighting on a budget, and there are tons of awesome tutorials as well as a great Lighting 101 series.
The flash
I’ve yet to invest in strong, continuous light sources. All I’m rocking is the Canon 580ex II, which was pricey enough, but it’s quite powerful and versatile (or so I’ve been told. At the moment I’m doing the equivalent of asking a Michelin star chef to make me some toast – ie, defo not using it to it’s full potential!).
The trigger
This is VERY important. The first step to getting the most out of your flash, I learned, it to get that bad boy off camera. You can do it using a simple cable, the fancy pricey Pocket Wizards, or, their (much) cheaper cousins, Cactus Triggers. I picked mine up on Gadget Infinity and they’re working like a charm (although I’ve only used them indoors – I hear they can get a bit sketchy outside, but hey, they’re for cheaps!)
The kit
Last Christmas, Eoghan went to the States and came back with one of the geekier and most awesome pressies he’s ever bought for me – The MPEX Strobist Starving Student Kit. It included a light stand that the flash hooks into, an umbrella to diffuse/spread the light (check out the Strobist tutorials for full explanations of the different light manipulation tools) and lots of other nifty gadgets. I used it to take these shots of Ethan back in January, but have to admit I haven’t used it much since.
The book
I ordered Joe McNally’s Hot Shoe Diaries a while back and fell in love with it. Like I’ve said before, I am mainly a natural light photographer, and he is mainly a flash/light man. And yet it was one of the best photography books I have read. Honest, goofy, and real, he speaks to you in a no nonsense way and explains how he gets some of his beautiful shots. He learned on the job, and reading his book you feel like that’s what you’re doing too – you’re not just reading this stuff, it feels like someone is right there, showing you how to do it. I’m going to start giving myself little assignments based on different chapters.
The DVD
I’m lusting after Zach Arias’s One Light DVD. Gingerpixel has it and will hopefully let me invade her house soon to watch it!

–

I haven’t put a huge amount of this into practice, I’ll admit, but now that it’s dark so early in the evening I hope to do a few more at-home mini shoots and set ups.

I took this shot of Ethan a few nights back – it took approximately eight minutes to get the crude lighting set-up up and running (shooting through an umbrella, camera left and slightly above his head) and although it’s painfully basic, I’m delighted with the catch lights, and with the the fact that I can take photos in the dark! The evenings are just opening up now. I also hope to practice mixing natural light with artificial, because I think that it where a lot of the magic happens.

Early morning Ethan

December 2, 2009

I woke up to the pat, pat, pat of two toddler hands on my head. Ethan was up, and had decided it was high time I awoke too. There was really pretty morning light streaming through the window, so I grabbed my camera (I swear, I don’t sleep with it… it just happened to be handy. Promise.) and snapped these two quick shots.

Oh, to be disciplined enough to get up this early every morning, just to get that gorgeous light.

Photo pressies part 2: Books

December 1, 2009

Within the Frame by David duChemin

Within the frame

Filled with lots of personal insights and simply stunning photography from around the world, this book really stands out from the rest. It’s tough to talk about vision and creativity in a market packed with speedy how-to tomes without losing your reader, but duChemin managed to keep me completely hooked. Get it here or on Amazon.

And speaking of speedy how-tos…

The Digital Photography Book Vol 2 by Scott Kelby

DigitalPhotography

My sis got me this for Christmas last year and I really enjoyed it. Scott Kelby is the editor of Photoshop User Magazine (he also has a great blog) and Vol 1 was one of the best-selling photography books in history. Kelby’s tips are super straight forward and easy to follow and he gets into the nitty gritty without getting bogged down. The cheesy humour that peppers the book isn’t for everybody, but I loved it! Nab it here or on Amazon.

The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman

Any fan of Schuman’s great, hugely sucessful street style blog or of street style in general would love this. He has an amazing fashion eye for original style, but also a great photograpaher’s eye for light, tone and mood. The little anecdotes about the fabulously fashionable people he photographs are great too. Buy it here and here.

The Best Camera is the One that’s With You by Chase Jarvis

Tied to the iPhone app of the same name, this book is a collection of iPhone photos taken by photographer Chase Jarvis. I love the app and am quite keen to have a look at the pics in this. He proves that a good photo doens’t have to rely on pricey gear or fancy Photoshop work. Pick it up here and here.

The Hot Shoe Diaries by Joe McNally

I’m mainly a natural-light photographer, and McNally is mainly a flash man, but I loved, loved, loved this book. His irreverent, self-deprecating stlye wins you over immediately and if the photo lover in your life has recently acquired a flash (or is getting on for Christmas) I can’t recommend this book enough. Loved it. It’s here and here.

The Unguarded Moment: Thirty Years of Photography by Steve McCurry

I’m dying to get my hands on this. I adore McCurry’s work (he too has a great blog) and his ability to capture such natural moments, such vibrant colours and such unforced expressions. I have his collection of portrait postcards and thery’re really inspiring (or, depending on my mood, depressing – his awesomeness can make you feel like giving up!)

Craft & Vision ebooks by David du Chemin

If you’re on a tight, Chris Kindle budget or fancy giving a more eco-friendly pressie, duChemin also has an amazing collection of $5 ebooks. I’ve bought a few of these and they really do give incredibly great bang for buck.
